Transgender Day of Remembrance

  • Living Table United Church of Christ 3805 40th St E Minneapolis, Minnesota 55406 (map)

This is the 20th anniversary of the Transgender Day of Remembrance. This service is hosted by Living Table and created and led by Transgender people.

"We set aside this Day to honor the gender martyrs who died from violence for living lives as their authentic selves - while at the same time we gather to loudly condemn the violence that is a threat to all trans and gender non-conforming folk.

"And violence comes in many shapes and sizes – regulatory violence like that being proposed by the current White House administration threatens our entire trans, gender non-conforming and non-binary population. Words on paper can be just as deadly as the physical weapons used against the trans folks we remember this coming Transgender Day of Remembrance.

"The Transgender Day of Remembrance is both a day of sorrow for our community and day of education for the rest of the world. That is why it is so heartening to see the large numbers of friends, allies and supporters who continue join us in these important annual gatherings.

"But there is also cause for optimism and hope. Because, even in these volatile times - with the increasing threats of violence, regulatory harassment and personal debasement - more and more transgender, gender non-conforming and non- binary people are stepping forward to present themselves to the world. They exhibit courage and resilience that is extraordinary.

"Many of the most vulnerable trans folk in our society face barriers to accessing basic needs: they may be unable to find gainful employment, obtain stable housing, or access health care services.

"Yet they persist.

"It is their courage and perseverance that adds hope to the sorrow that these Transgender Day of Remembrance services."
